Pro/E

How do I export my Pro/E assembly file to IPA?

The "Pro to IPA" and "Update IPA Parts" options do not appear on the Pro/E menu manager.

What is the PTC Timeout Problem and how do I fix it?

Is it possible to specify a location for the IPA files to be exported to?

SolidWorks

Is is necessary to have SolidWorks installed on the the IPA machine?

Solid Edge

When opening my Solid Edge assembly in IPA I get messages indicating the parts contain links to the assembly and am asked whether I want to open the assembly.

Inventor

I am using IPA 7.3 and Inventor 7 and I am not able to open Inventor files in IPA.

I-DEAS

What file format can IPA open from I-DEAS 7

What file format can IPA open from I-DEAS 8 and 9

Other CAD Systems

My CAD system is not one of the primary systems that IPA has a direct integration with. How can I import my data to IPA?

Pro/E

How do I export my Pro/E assembly file to IPA?

Select the "Pro to IPA" command from the menu manager as shown below. For additional information regarding the interface between IPA and Pro/E download the Pro to IPA interface document. If the "Pro to IPA" option is not available on the menu manager refer to the Pro to IPA setup troubleshooting document.

The "Pro to IPA" and "Update IPA Parts" options do not appear on the Pro/E menu manager.

Click to download the Pro to IPA setup troubleshooting document.

What is the PTC Timeout Problem and how do I fix it?

In early 2004, PTC sent out an announcement to their customers regarding a mandatory software update to correct a timeout problem that causes communications failures between Pro/ENGINEER and certain related applications. This problem began appearing on January 10th, 2004 and will continue until the PTC update is applied. Details concerning this issue are available here.

Immersive Design Technical Support determined that this PTC issue affects the integration of IPA with Pro/ENGINEER. Specifically, the Pro to IPA menus will not be available when Pro/E is launched and users will be unable to start IPA with their Pro/E models. We urge all of our customers to visit the PTC page referenced above and apply the PTC-supplied update if it applies to their installation.

Is it possible to specify a location for the IPA files to be exported to?

By default the IPA files will be exported to the directory of the Pro/E assembly. If this directory is read only or under control of a PDM system, the files will be exported to a folder in the Immersive Design\IPA 8.0\Data directory. To change this location a registry entry must be modified. An applet exists to update this location. Download and run the following file, Pro2IPAconfig.exe.

SolidWorks

Is is necessary to have SolidWorks installed on the the IPA machine?

No. IPA can open SolidWorks assembly files directly without having to go through SolidWorks. This makes it possible for departments outside of engineering to conveinently browse to a SolidWorks assembly and begin working with it. Technical publications specialists, manufacturing engineers, as well as the sales\marketing group are all able to generate documentation and presentation materials from the 3D SolidWorks files with IPA.

Solid Edge

When opening my Solid Edge assembly in IPA I get messages indicating the parts contain links to the assembly and am asked whether I want to open the assembly.

Select NO. Selecting yes a these prompts will result in missing parts in the IPA assembly.

Inventor

I am using IPA 7.3 and Inventor 7 and I am not able to open Inventor files in IPA.

A new reader has been released to support Inventor V7. Download the idiai6c.dll file and copy into the IPA 7.3\Plugins directory overwriting the existing version of this file.

I-DEAS

What file format can IPA open from I-DEAS V7

IPA will directly read in I-DEAS V7 Crushed ASCII files (*.mca).

To create Crushed ASCII file from I-DEAS:

  • Open Part/Assembly in I-DEAS
  • Shade Part/Assembly
  • In the I-DEAS command prompt type the following:  /xto te gg go IDI
  • After the file is created, start IPA and do a File->Open. Now, select the down arrow next to "Files of Type" and select "I-DEAS MCA file (*.mca)". Now browse for the file you just exported. This will load the MCA file into IPA
  • Then, do a File->Save as "IPA Assembly and Binary Parts (*.idasf)" into a new
folder somewhere. This will save all the components into the IPA file format

What file format can IPA open from I-DEAS V8 and V9

IPA can import I-DEAS IDI (InterOperability Data Interface) files from I-DEAS V8 and V9.

To export an IDI file from I-DEAS:

  • Open an assembly and shade the image
  • Select the "Hierarchy" icon and select the upper most assembly. All components should be highlighted now
  • Select the Dismiss button
  • If there is NO Assembly you must create a new one. This can be done by:
    o Selecting the "Hierarchy" button
o Select the "Add Parent" button and define an Assembly name
  • For a new or existing Assembly with no parts defined, you must add the parts by doing the following:
o Select the Assembly from the "Hierarchy" list
o Select the "Add to" button
o Indicate, with the mouse, a box surrounding the Assembly geometry
o Press the <Enter> key. Now all the parts should be highlighted in the "Hierarchy" list.
    o Select the Dismiss button
  • In the I-DEAS command prompt type the following:  /xto te gg go IDI
  • After running this command you will be asked where to save the "<filename>.idi" file.
  • You will then be led through a variety of prompts(About 10) for various properties. Just accept the defaults by pressing the <Enter> key.
  • After the file is created, start IPA and do a File->Open. Now, select the down arrow next to "Files of Type" and select "I-DEAS IDI file (*.idi)". Now browse for the file you just exported. This will load the IDI file into IPA.
  • Then, do a File->Save as "IPA Assembly and Binary Parts (*.idasf)" into a new
folder somewhere. This will save all the components into the IPA file format

Other CAD Systems

My CAD system is not one of the primary systems that IPA has a direct integration with. How can I import my data to IPA?

IPA imports stl (stereolithography) files. Some CAD systems export a series of stl files, one for each part, and other CAD systems export a single stl file with all the parts in the one file. If just a single stl file is exported the assembly will appear as just a single part in IPA. It may be possible to split this stl file into multiple components with a utitity we have created. Download and extract the utility to a new directory. Copy your stl file into the folder and then double click the separate.bat file. You can now load the .idasf file directly into IPA.
